What is Powder Horn?

Powder Horn is a training experience designed to expose the Venturing or Boy Scout leader to activities and resources necessary to operate a successful outdoor / high adventure program in several ways:

Powder Horn...

Helps leaders safely conduct outdoor activities of a fun and challenging nature.

Provides an introduction to the resources necessary to successfully lead their Venturers and older Boy Scouts through a program of high adventure.

Familiarizes the Advisor with the Ranger program so that he or she can help the Venturer to meet the requirements of the Ranger Award.

This course is based on the Venturing Ranger core and elective requirements giving participants an exposure to outdoor/high adventure resources.

It is based on the eight core and eighteen electives found in the Venturing Ranger program. It is intended to help adult leaders get out of the box in finding and using resources and in the way they lead their unit-level high adventure programs. No high adventure skills are taught in this course. It is designed to have some disciplines introduced with a hands-on segment. Example: For scuba if a pool is available, it is suggested to do a Discover Scuba (PADI) session where participants get into a shallow pool and wear scuba gear. It is not scuba certification. Participants will not learn how to rock climb or shoot a skeet course, but will learn where to go to find those who can teach these skills to Boy Scouts and Venturers.

  2. Have a current BSA Class III physical

Recognition Device

Completion of the Powder Horn course is recognized by the wearing of the Powder Horn recognition device designed to hang from your left shirt flap pocket.

Uniform

Venturing crews have the opportunity to wear the uniform the local crew decides upon.  We encourage you to wear your uniform for the course photo.   Other activities will be more open to wear practical outdoor clothing appropriate for the weather conditions.

Powder Horn is not a personal development / leadership building course like Wood Badge. Power Horn will not make you an expert in the activities you will explore but will introduce you to get the resources to introduce the activity into your unit.

Bring a Buddy

Powder Horn can be more fun and valuable to your home unit if you bring a buddy along.
